Exporting to Europe? Make sure you have the right advice

The UK is one of the largest economies in the world and, as an island nation, is dependent on exports to drive the economy.

Since the new Brexit rules have come into place, governing how we trade with the EU, the nation has also faced uncertainty over the value of the pound and war in Europe making conditions more challenging for exporters.

Despite this, figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) in August show total exports of goods, excluding precious metals, increased by £0.4 billion (1.2 per cent). This was driven by a £0.7 billion (4.1 per cent) increase in exports to non-EU countries, while exports to EU countries decreased by £0.3 billion (1.5 per cent).

Still struggling to trade with the EU?

The Export Support Service is an online helpline service where all UK businesses can get answers to practical questions about exporting to Europe.

Its advice covers:

  • Any paperwork that is now needed to move your exports to Europe
  • Information on the rules for a specific country where you want to sell services

A ‘one-stop shop’, it brings together UK Government information, making it easier for exporters to access advice and support.

There are several areas where exporters can seek advice, including:

  • Guidance on recognising professional qualifications
  • The paperwork that will be needed to sell your goods abroad
  • How to navigate licences, certificates, and authorisations
