Government closing in on data sharing deal with the US

The UK is closing in on a data information-sharing agreement with the USA, which could be signed within weeks.

So-called data adequacy agreements allow personal data to be transferred freely between different countries.

The deal is hoped to boost business between the two countries, but also raises questions about privacy.

Talks on a range of digital issues

Secretary of State for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport, Michelle Donelan, held talks with US counterpart Gina Raimondo as part of the US politician’s visit to London, and discussed a range of digital issues, according to the Department of Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS).

The Government says the protection of personal data and the free flow of personal data across borders can be mutually reinforcing priorities.

It added that reducing barriers to data flows makes it easier for businesses to trade and benefits consumers with better access to higher-quality products and lower prices.

Exports worth around £69 billion

British data services exports to the US, like finance and computer services, were estimated to be worth more than £69 billion in 2020 and are set to grow.

At the meeting the two countries committed to a new official annual dialogue, building on a tech co-operation agreement signed last year.

Biden order welcomed

Ms Donelan said: “The United States shares our democratic values, digital priorities and commitment to high standards of data privacy. Data and tech are creating new opportunities for growth and connection between our two countries, including between our world-leading tech industries.”

She also welcomed the publication of the Executive Order, signed by President Biden, which strengthens the safeguards and establishes new redress routes for UK data processed by US authorities.

The UK agreed on a rollover deal with the European Union last year replicating what was in place before Brexit, and more recently signed a similar agreement with South Korea.
