What does the new Horizon Europe deal mean for UK businesses?

With a budget of over £82 billion, Horizon Europe is the primary funding programme for research and innovation in the European Union (EU).

Due to a recent agreement, the UK will be able to participate in the Horizon scheme as of January 2024.

The programme strengthens the impact of research and innovation through collaboration and funding.

It also creates jobs and fosters economic growth by increasing the industrial competitiveness of European countries and optimising the impact of research and development (R&D) in the European area.

Whilst many of the nations contributing are from the EU, Britain has joined a small group of non-EU members like Norway, Israel and New Zealand who also participate.

Horizon’s missions

Horizon has identified five key issues they intend to address with their funding.

  • Reducing climate change
  • Curing cancer
  • Enhancing ocean and water quality
  • Developing smart cities
  • Improving soil health

If your business furthers the progression of any of these missions, you could be eligible for a slice of the £82 billion on offer.
