US public back trade deal with the UK post-Brexit

They say as one door closes, another one opens. British businesses do not want restrictions placed upon their access to the EU, but many would welcome more open trade with the US.

Similarly, new research from Emerson College, a university in Boston, Massachusetts has found that many Americans would welcome freer trade with the UK as well.

According to the study, 63 per cent of Americans would welcome a trade deal being introduced before or soon after Brexit, while only 11 per cent did not want a deal.

More than half of those surveyed also believed their country’s relationship with the UK is more important today than it was five years ago, with 56 per cent describing Britain as America’s most strategic foreign partner.

Nell Breyer, Executive Director of the Association of Marshall Scholars, said: “The alliance appears to be increasingly important in the eyes of the American public.

“In a period of deep uncertainty for the British public, they should know that Americans see the ties that bind us as increasingly significant, and there is strong American support for developing new opportunities to further this relationship.”
