UK and China agree £230 million British beef export deal

British beef is set to be exported to China after a trade deal between the UK and China was finalised.

China could see British beef by Christmas after Chinese Government officials signed a protocol agreement to export beef from the UK for the first time in 20 years since a ban was imposed after the Bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) outbreak.

The deal was approved last week that will allow full access to the market, which is set to be worth more than £230 million over the next five years.

Experts have called the agreement a ‘triumph’, with industry professionals working in partnership for five years to secure the deal which will see four sites exporting beef initially.

UK exports to China increased to a record £23.1 billion last year, with the deal to export British beef to the country set to boost exports again.

The UK is currently scheduled to leave the European Union on 31 October and has now signed free trade continuity agreements with 47 countries, including a deal with Georgia this week.

The deal is formally known as the ‘UK-Georgia Strategic Partnership and Cooperation Agreement’ and replaces the current EU agreement once the UK leave the European Union (EU).
