UK Supreme Court President calls to protect ‘the demands of international businesses’ post-Brexit

The President of the UK’s Supreme Court has said that the nation’s law should remain ‘attuned to the demands of international businesses’ once Britain has formally left the European Union (EU).

The comments were made during a speech in London on 3 July, in which Neuberger insisted that UK Judges would like to see a Brexit deal which ‘in no way undermines’ London’s current reputation as ‘the world centre’ for law, dispute resolution and international business.

Speaking at the Australian Bar Association’s recent Biennial Conference, he said: “The common law which is so attuned to the needs and realities of the commercial world, will remain as attuned to the demands of international business as it ever was.

“[Brexit] will in no way undermine London’s status as the world centre for legal services generally and dispute resolution in particular.”

He added: “Left to our own common law devices we will in some respects be able to react more quickly and freely to developments in our fast-changing world.”

However, he insisted that Brexit would be used as an opportunity or ‘spur’ for Britain’s existing legal framework to be changed for the better.
