The Department for International Trade has said that Game of Thrones is the perfect example of what Britain does best when it comes to exports and expertise.
Whether you were a fan of the series or not, it is undeniable that the show has become a global phenomenon during the last eight years that it has been on our screens.
The show itself is an HBO production which is US-based, but much of the horses, actors, costumes and locations were provided by UK companies.
This was best reflected in the main cast, eight out of 10 of which were British. In fact, the show is believed to have launched the careers of around 30 actors since hitting the screens in 2011.
The UK’s creative industries are booming and it is thought that companies in this sector currently contribute in excess of over £100 billion a year to the economy – an increase of around 53 per cent since 2010. The film industry also employs around two million people in various roles.
Liam Fox, Secretary of State for International Trade said: “For nearly a decade, Game of Thrones has provided opportunities for British business to showcase their products, services and talent on the world stage.
“Not only have exports and investment attributed to the show surged in Northern Ireland, but the best of British talent from across the UK have taken advantage of the opportunities it presented.
“I encourage creative business to tap into this success and I want to further strengthen international ties in the industry to make it easier for companies of all sizes to do business internationally.”
