Impressive performance for UK goods exports

English goods exports have increased by an impressive 6.5 per cent year-on-year, while good exports from Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland have also increased significantly over the same period, new official data reveals.

According to figures from HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC), every part of the UK has enjoyed substantial increases in export activity over the past 12 months, with the average value of goods exported per exporter rising to £750,000.

Regionally, the East Midlands saw the largest increase in the value of goods exports over the course of the year, rising from £18.4 billion to £21.2 billion.

However, London – along with other regions such as Yorkshire and South West England – all recorded sales increases of more than eight per cent, the data reveals.

Across the whole of the UK, the number of businesses exporting their products has risen by 4.1 per cent year-on-year to reach more than 109,000, HMRC adds.

Dr Liam Fox, the UK’s International Trade Secretary, said: “As we continue our path to Brexit, HMRC’s latest figures clearly show every part of the UK making the most of global opportunities as goods exports rise across the country.

“More than 100,000 businesses are expanding their horizons and making the most of the demand for quality British goods.

“For some, this isn’t the end of the road but the start to their exporting journey.”
