Majority of SMEs believe next Government will secure strong post-Brexit trade deals

A new business confidence tracker suggests that the majority of UK businesses believe that the next Government will succeed in negotiating strong post-Brexit trade deals, regardless of the outcome of the upcoming General Election.

It adds that more than three quarters of Britain’s small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) believe that Brexit will either do no harm to their business, or inadvertently boost their fortunes.

The figures come from flexible workspace operator Citibase’s Q2 business barometer, which found that the majority of SMEs are now feeling more confident about their post-Brexit future than they were at the beginning of 2017.

Overall, there was a five per cent rise in the number of businesses who thought that Brexit would have a positive impact on their operations.

The news comes despite ongoing political uncertainty and shortly after Prime Minister Theresa May announced a snap General Election to be held on 8 June.

Commenting on the data, Steven Jude, CEO of Citibase, said: “The results of our latest Index show UK SMEs have faith that the Government will negotiate a good deal for businesses following an interesting call from Theresa May to hold a snap general election on 8 June.

“SMEs are the heartbeat of UK business and now more than ever these businesses will be crucial to our economy – it’s great that they have displayed such tremendous positivity”.
